Crossover Polestar 3, the brother of the big Volvo: the first photo in pixel coloring
Swedish brand Polestar, which split from parent company Volvo in 2017, has released the first photo of its third model, the coupe-shaped flagship Polestar 3 crossover, which will begin production next year at Volvo’s US plant in South Carolina.
Polestar grew out of a Volvo tuner and positions itself as a manufacturer of premium electric vehicles with a focus on sport and maximum environmental friendliness. Unfortunately, during the four years of independent life, Polestar has not achieved significant success in the global market. The assembly of two existing models – the Polestar 1 hybrid coupe and the Polestar 2 compact electric cross-liftback – takes place in China; by the end of 2021, Polestar plans to sell just 29,000 vehicles worldwide.
For comparison, let’s say that Chinese electric vehicle startup Nio, which started its business around the same time as Polestar, managed to sell more than 70,000 electric vehicles in China in the first three quarters of this year and entered the European market in the summer.
North Star 3
Next year, Polestar is poised to take the big leap and launch the flagship crossover Polestar 3 globally, which will have nothing to do with Volvo models in terms of design. The first teaser for the Polestar 3 came out in September: it was a profile photo of the car under a blanket, and now the Swedish brand has shown the entire crossover three blocks away, but in camouflage.
The camouflage pixels, however, do not interfere with the design features: the front end is inspired by the 2020 Polestar Precept concept sedan and the 2024 Polestar 5 production version. Polestar 3 and Polestar 5, another model will see the light: the Polestar 4 crossover (more compact than the Polestar 3, but larger than the Polestar 2).
North Star 3
Production of the Polestar 1 coupe will end this year, so the Polestar product line for the next four years will consist of four electric models, each with different modifications. In the first half of next year, Polestar wants to conduct an IPO on the Nasdaq exchange, that is, become a public company and receive tangible financial injections from investors. Polestar aims to reach 290,000 electric vehicles per year by 2025.
Returning to the Polestar 3, we recall that this model is based on the Volvo SPA2 platform, it will also receive a future large Volvo electric crossover (it will not be called the XC90, but will receive a different name), both cars will be registered at the Volvo plant in Ridgeville (a suburb of Charleston, USA)., South Carolina). Launched in 2018, this plant now produces only Volvo S60 sedans, and with an expected capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year, it is effectively "idle". Two large electric crossovers will give it a payload. Most likely, the Polestar 4 crossover will be registered here, and the production of the Polestar 5 sedan will be launched in China.
