New Chinese BAW BJ212: first images

The Chinese company BAW, part of the BAIC automotive group, plans to introduce a new generation of its BJ212 SUV soon. Using the available information, we made an idea of how the novelty will look like.

Model BJ212 appeared in 1965. For several decades, the SUV has been the main vehicle of the People's Liberation Army of China. Despite the external similarity with the UAZ-469, they are not technical relatives. But their history has a lot in common, because both SUVs are still on the assembly line, having undergone many updates and improvements during this time. The latest major update to the Chinese model came last year, with the BJ212 getting a longer wheelbase, independent front suspension and an all-new interior. Now the next upgrade is next in line, and we have drawings of a future novelty at our disposal.

Judging by them, the body as a whole can remain the same, but will receive a number of new elements. Thus, there will be a completely new front end with round LED headlights that will house the thin circles of daytime running lights, like the new Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The grille, as before, will have three rounded slots, but now they will be the same size, and the emblem will become a letter. The turn signals will become a bit narrower, the front fenders will become larger and hang over the wheels, like on the Wrangler. There will also be a completely new front bumper with integrated fog lights and tow hooks. The windshield, judging by the design, will be glued (instead of seals on the current model). As for the back of the SUV, Wrangler-inspired LED lights, a new rear bumper with integrated lighting elements, and a raised rear window will be the most noticeable elements here. In addition, the SUV will feature larger sprockets with newly developed alloy wheels.

There is no information about the technical part of the future SUV yet. The current BJ212 of the last few years of production was equipped with licensed Mitsubishi turbocharged gasoline engines, including 1.5 from 136 horsepower (200 Nm) paired with a 5-speed “mechanics” and 2.4 from 211 horsepower (320 Nm).) with a 6-speed manual transmission motor. The novelty will certainly receive a more modern technical stuffing and, most likely, will be exclusively civilian.

The premiere of the new SUV is expected in the coming months.
