Alfa Romeo is preparing to release a new crossover in a couple of years: it will have versions with internal combustion engines

We are talking about a compact SUV, which will probably be called the Brennero. It will be based on the STLA Small platform, which “marries” the new product to the Opel Mokka.

Alfa Romeo needs to increase brand sales and profitability in the coming years. So far, the results of the brand in the European market leave much to be desired: Alfa has had a “minus” since 2018. At the same time, according to the results of the pre-crisis 2019, the indicator fell by more than 53%, during the “covid” 2020 it decreased by another 34.3%, and last year it continued to fall: in January-November 2021, buyers bought 23,446 units, which is by 25.5% less than in the first 11 months of the previous year.

Alfa Romeo was formerly owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles but merged with PSA early last year. As a result of this merger of two major players in the global market, a new automotive giant appeared – Stellantis (the former names of the participants in the transaction are now not used). Now Alfa Romeo needs to reach the required level of profitability, the first step in this direction was taken quite recently – we are talking about the presentation of the new Tonale crossover.

When the SUV enters the market, it will take the place of the base model in the Alfa Romeo lineup. As Kolesa.ru previously reported, the novelty is based on the FCA Small Wide platform developed by Fiat. Tonale has versions with traditional internal combustion engines, but the main focus remains on hybrids. Recall that the top version is a rechargeable hybrid, which shared the “stuffing” with the Jeep Compass 4xe. At the heart of the installation is a 1.3-liter gasoline “turbo” MultiAir (together with 6AKP), which drives the front wheels. And on the rear axle is a 122-horsepower electric motor. The total power of this system is 275 hp.

However, the company decided not to stop there: the media have long been saying that Alfa Romeo will release an even more compact crossover. Now the head of the company, Jean-Philippe Imparato, in an interview with Automotive News Europe, confirmed the appearance of this model and announced the launch date for the production of SUVs: according to the plan, it will be put into production in 2024.

The model will roll off the assembly line of the Polish plant Stellantis, in the same place as the Fiat 500X, as well as the Jeep Renegade. The future car will be based on the STLA Small platform, so Opel Mokka and Peugeot 2008 will become its “closest relatives”. It was previously reported that the new product will be called Brenner. It is already known that this model will be the first electric car of the brand. At the same time, which is important, the crossover will have versions with an internal combustion engine.

Later, the Alfa Romeo lineup will be replenished with models without an alternative electric “stuffing”: the first novelty of this type promises to appear in 2025. There are no details about this car yet, the head of the company only indicated that the model will be intended mainly for the US market. Even later, the new generation Giulia and Stelvio will enter the market (they will also have only “green” equipment).

As it became known earlier, in the future (after working on the so-called “mass” models), the brand intends to release a new sports car. It is expected to appear before the end of this decade. Other innovations in the niche segment may also follow. It is assumed that in the course of work on the design of sports cars, the creators will “look for inspiration” in the Alfa Romeo Spider “Duetto” and T33 Stradale.
