Volvo has quietly updated the XC40 crossover in the spirit of the C40 coupe cousin
Photos of the restyled Volvo XC40 appeared on the European consumer sites of the Swedish brand.
The Volvo XC40 compact crossover has been in production since 2017; now it's time for a planned restyling, but it turned out to be so modest that Volvo did not even consider it necessary to issue a press release on this matter, but simply released an update. The SUV is sold without too much excitement. According to the company itself, in 2021 the XC40 became the second most popular Volvo model in the world after the midsize XC60 with sales of 215,635 and 201,037 units, respectively. Compared to 2020, demand for the Volvo XC40 increased by 8.4%, and in total Volvo sold 698,693 passenger cars in 2021 (+5.6%). recently, 1,836 units of the Volvo XC40 were sold last year. (+62.1%).
The update brings the Volvo XC40 a front end inspired by the Volvo C40 Rechage coupe-shaped electric crossover that debuted last year, with narrower headlights and a restyled bumper with Thor (or just the “T”) side sections. At the stern, the LED filling of the lights has changed a bit, and the exhaust pipes of the gasoline versions are hidden under the bumper skirt – Volvo is now ashamed of them. In the cabin, we did not find significant visual changes, but there was a new version of the Google multimedia system and new trim materials.
In Volvo's key European market, the XC40 crossover continues to be offered with petrol, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains. Diesel engines are no longer available for this model.
The gasoline range consists of the basic front-wheel drive version of the T2 with a 1.5-liter “turbo engine” (129 hp) and an 8-speed hydromechanical “automatic”. This is followed by mild hybrids with a 48-volt starter paired with a 2.0-liter turbo engine: B3 (163 hp), B4 (197 hp) and B5 (250 hp). Versions B3 and B4 are combined with a 7-speed “automatic” type DCT (with two clutches), and version B5 – with an 8-speed “hydromechanics”. Four-wheel drive is available for the B4 version and by default for the B5 version.

There are two plug-in hybrid versions, the T4 and T5, both powered by a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine with 129 and 180 horsepower respectively, assisted by an 82-horsepower electric motor. Transmission: 7-speed automatic DCT, front-wheel drive only. The power reserve of the lithium-ion battery located in the central tunnel is up to 45 km.

There are also two electric versions: with an electric motor with 231 hp on the front axle and with two electric motors (one for each axle) with 204 hp each. The single-engine version is equipped with a 69 kWh battery and can travel up to 423 km on a single charge, the dual-engine version is equipped with a 78 kWh battery, which gives a range of up to 418 km.
Recently, everything is much simpler: two petrol versions are available with a 2.0-liter engine without hybrid add-ons and only with an 8-speed “hydromechanics” – T3 front-wheel drive (150 hp) and T4 all-wheel drive (190 hp). pp.), but on the current Volvo consumer site, the XC40 crossover is still presented in a pre-styling body.
Volvo is due to introduce an electric replacement for its flagship XC90 crossover this year; by 2030, the Swedish brand's lineup will consist exclusively of electric vehicles.
