Land Rover Defender – Toyota Land Cruiser Prado: where is the legend?
Land Rover Defender vs. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado – I was looking forward to this test. Here, on his channel in Zen, he issued several review materials, where Defender jumped in the photo and flew like a James Bond car. The Toyota Prado is a longtime contributor to both my video tests and editorial reports. He showed himself to be an indestructible frame “piece of iron”, deservedly enjoying popular respect. Defender is now without a frame – with a load-bearing body. Let's see if he has become better and what he will oppose to the Japanese.
The Briton values himself more and asks for 5 million standard units, the Japanese for half a million less. And in base prices, Defender is more expensive – respectively, from 4,030,000; from 2 760000 rub.
Both competitors have diesel engines of 200 horses. True, the Defender has a smaller engine size (2.0TD versus 2.8TD for the Prado).
The Briton has a more modern 8-speed classic automatic, the Prado has a 6-speed one – also a classic. The Defender is lighter and larger in size. It will be interesting to compare them in our exercises. Specifications at the end of the material.
Acceleration from standstill to “hundreds”.
The Defender shows an excellent result – 10.2 s. to “hundreds” and wins the first exercise. Toyota Prado is noticeably inferior in dynamics – 11.5 seconds. Measurements are taken for comparison only, they may differ from the technical specifications, since the surface and terrain of the road may be different. Interestingly, the Land Rover Defender in our instrumental measurements surpassed the technical specifications of the factory. He gets the first score on the test.
We evaluate the interior from the front.
Defender is a more modern car, equipped with all the electronic bells and whistles. Prado, although recently updated, is clearly losing. Ball goes to Defender.
We evaluate the back row.
In the back row, the Prado is noticeably larger. There are no USB sockets here, but there is plenty of room for the knees and a lot of space above the head. The Defender has USB outlets, but no climate control for rear passengers. For legroom and headroom, the score goes to Defender.
Estimate the dimensions of the trunks.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is smaller than the Defender in terms of technical characteristics. But in reality, not everything is so clear. The experts gave a point to the Japanese – he has a higher trunk. Competitors are close in length and width.
Off-road:
Defender, alas, could not lift the fan out of the deep snow.
Off-road wins Toyota Prado. His motor is more responsive in snowdrifts and he covers the distance faster than the Defender. The Briton drove through deep virgin soil, but reacted worse to “gas”, and we were all afraid that he could get stuck on such tires at any moment.
In the video, and here in the photo, please note that the back of the Defender has a normal wheel with hooks that could fight the Prado, but it didn't happen. The point goes to the Japanese.
We measure ground clearance.
Here is a clear advantage of Defender. He air suspension allows you to raise the body right up to 360 mm. Toyota Prado can also have pneuma, but this will require an additional payment. Our test showed that it may not be necessary to overpay for something that can break and require more costs.
The total score in the Land Rover Defender test against the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is 3:3 – a draw.
Toyota Prado knowingly enjoys the popularity of an indestructible all-terrain vehicle, on which people can go both to the village and to the city. You don't have to worry about getting stuck somewhere along the way.
Land Rover Defender proved to be a good all-terrain vehicle. On road tires on a long journey, it can be very comfortable and dynamic, giving all the options you need for travel enthusiasts. Those who want to drive it into a rut or sleet should arm themselves with the right tires – an example is a spare tire.
