Crossover Roewe RX5 Max changed its image and found a more powerful base engine

The models of the brand owned by the SAIC concern completely redrawn the front end, there are other new things, including in terms of technology. The old SUV from the range, most likely, will not disappear.

The Roewe RX5 Max SUV launched in China in 2019, it is created on the same platform as the “just” RX5, which appeared three years earlier. The cross with the prefix is larger and more expensive, and it initially had its own design, which, however, does not at all prevent the Roewe brand from considering cars as members of the same family – their sales are summed up. Last year, the older SUV was refreshed: it got a new grille, plus there was less chrome on the outside. At the same time, the pre-reform crossover did not disappear from sale, but in order not to confuse the Maxes, the restyled one was given the “surname” Supreme. And now the SUV has been updated again, only much more seriously: photos and characteristics of such a model appeared in the database of the Ministry of Industry of the PRC.

The cross received a two-tier head optics: LED strips of running lights are located on top, which are interconnected by a shiny plate with the Roewe inscription, below are the main headlight blocks (in the top version, they are also, of course, on LEDs). The radiator grill was extended in breadth, in addition, it was “dropped” to the lower edge of the new bumper. Also replaced the hood cover, rear bumper and mirror housings. The lanterns have the same shape, but the filling is different. And the RX5 Max now has retractable door handles. By the way, the two-story optics, hood, mirrors and handles are exactly the same as those of the recently declassified Roewe Jing cross-coupe, so these SUVs are relatives.

The length of the transformed RX5 Max is 4767 mm, which is 29 mm more than that of the pre-reform. The width, on the contrary, is reduced from 1891 to 1875 mm. The height and wheelbase are the same – 1725 and 2760 mm, respectively. Well, we note that the coupe-like Roewe Jing is a little more compact.

The salon of the restyled Max has not yet been exposed. It is possible that he changed the vertical touchscreen of the multimedia system to a horizontal tablet, like the “coupe”.

Pre-reform Roewe RX5 Max Supreme

As before, the RX5 Max will be available with two petrol turbo fours. The base 15C4E 1.5 engine has increased output – 181 instead of 173 hp, and the two-liter 20L4E engine still produces 231 hp. (the cross-coupe Jing has the same motors). The Chinese Ministry of Industry does not indicate boxes. The pre-reform RX5 Max with 1.5T is offered with a six-speed “mechanics” or “automatic”, the 2.0T engine is combined with a six-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches. All-wheel drive is reserved only for the top-end SUV with a two-liter engine. In addition, Max has a hybrid version, and it is still with the 2019 design.

The updated Roewe RX5 Max should celebrate a full-fledged premiere this year, it will probably have another set-top box. It is possible that both Supreme and the very first Max will remain in service. Meanwhile, the younger RX5 is also presented today in several versions at once: this is a cross with a 2016 design, a more aggressive RX5 Plus, an updated version of the latter, as well as a hybrid and an electric car. In general, only the Haval H6, which also has many options, can compare with the extensive family of R-X-fifths.
