The new Renault Scenic is a crossover instead of a compact van, electric motors instead of internal combustion engines

The outdated Renault Scenic will survive, but the format will change. The next generation is expected in 2024.

The Scenic is one of the pioneers of the compact van class, which sold more than 300,000 units per year in Europe in the penultimate decade and was one of Renault's best-selling locomotives. As consumer focus shifted from compact trucks to crossovers, demand for the Scenic began to wane. In pre-COVID 2019, Scenic sold 76,045 units in Europe, according to CarSalesBase, in 2020 demand fell to 36,592 units and in 2021 to 20,678 units. Many competitors have already died in the fight against crossovers, and for those who survived, things are also like this: the Volkswagen Touran was sold last year in Europe in the amount of 30,543 units, the Citroen C4 Spacetourer – 16,826 units.

The current fourth-generation Renault Scenic has been produced since 2016 in 5- and 7-seater versions (the 7-seater has the Grand prefix) and has not yet received restyling, and Scenic has already left some markets (for example, from the UNITED KINGDOM). Last year saw the debut of the new Renault Kangoo Heel, a passenger version aimed at minivan enthusiasts, while the Scenic will return in 2024 as a compact electric crossover, according to British magazine Auto Express.

Last week, Renault presented an updated plan for the next releases: three electric models have been announced for 2024, one of which, according to reports, will be the new Scenic. According to British colleagues, the “fifth” Scenic will be based on the already presented Megane E-Tech Electric compact electric hatchback on the CMF-EV modular platform. A 7 seater long wheelbase version is not planned due to platform design limitations, but cannot be ruled out in the future, i.e. on a next generation platform

The main competitor of the new Scenic in the European market will be the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover. The French SUV will be offered in single- or twin-engine (AWD) versions and with a choice of batteries, but there are no plans yet for an Alpine-branded hot version to compete with VW. ID.4 GTX. So far, only one GT X-Over coupe-shaped crossover has been announced in the Alpine lineup, the debut of which is also expected in 2024, while the Scenic will receive a more angular and practical body with a second-row high roof and a large trunk, which means owners of past generations of compact pickups should be pleased..
