Restyling brought Ford Expedition a new off-road version and a more powerful engine
Updated SUVs of the American brand will appear on sale in the home market next winter.
Ford has been producing the Expedition full-size SUV since 1996, and the model has changed generations several times since then. The current fourth generation car was introduced in February 2017. US dealers sold 77,838 units in the last COVID-19 year, down 12.4% from a year earlier. In the first eight months of this year, customers bought 58,320 copies, which is 31.6% more than in January-August 2020.

For comparison, the competitor, Chevrolet Tahoe, has a higher figure in the home market: for the “crisis" last year, the SUV sold 88,238 cars, which is 12.8% less than in 2019. For the first half of this year (more up-to-date data is not yet available, since the company sends a sales report once a quarter), 50,946 cars were sold in the United States (almost 40% more than in January-June 2020).
Now Ford has updated the Expedition SUV. Such cars received a changed appearance: the cars already have LED head optics in the basic versions, in addition, they were equipped with other taillights, rims of the original design and other radiator grilles that change performance depending on the modification. At the stern, a noticeable change was the reduced space for placing an autonumber on the door.
The standard “refreshed” Ford Expedition has a 12-inch horizontal touchscreen (previously 8 inches) of the Sync 4 infotainment system in the cabin. A virtual “tidy” is offered as an option, the diagonal of this display is 12.4 inches. The top versions are equipped with a Sync 4A multimedia system with a large vertical tablet (15.5 inches) and an over-the-air update function.

The update brought the model a new off-road version of the Timberline. In the list of its main differences, the extended track and high ground clearance, it is 269 mm. In addition, this performance was equipped with off-road tires (33 inches), reinforced bottom protection (like a “charged” Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck), as well as an electronic assistant that helps to reduce the turning radius when driving off-road (an SUV has the same Bronco).
In addition, during the restyling, Ford did not disregard the “stuffing” of the Expedition. The full-size SUV is still equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost biturbo engine, but it has been boosted to 446 hp. power and 691 Nm of torque (for the predecessor, the figures were 380 hp and 637 Nm).
Note that this option is equipped with an SUV in the new Timberline off-road version, as well as in another version – the Stealth Edition Performance Package. Such a car has 22-inch wheels, sports suspension, red brake calipers, various black decorative elements on the body. Note that earlier the most powerful version of the model – Platinum – produced 405 hp. (651 Nm).
The updated SUV will enter the American market next winter. Prices will be announced closer to the start of sales. The cost of the pre-reform Ford Expedition in the US now ranges from $50,595 to $76,150 (equivalent to about 3.7 to 5.6 million conventional units at the current exchange rate).
