Restyling brought Geely Coolray and Icon crossovers a new motor

The SUV familiar to many users has changed a lot in appearance, while the Icon models, which are not sold in our country, have only slightly changed the design.

The Geely Coolray compact crossover, created on the BMA (B-segment Modular Architecture) platform, arrived on the market in 2020, but it has been presented in the homeland of the five-door brand since 2018, where it bears the name Binyue (“Binyue”) Binyu “. In the summer of 2021, the SUV destined for China was upgraded with different bumpers, a dark X-shaped insert at the front, and animated turn signals. At the end of the same year, it turned out that Binyue would be upgraded again, and much more seriously. Now the appearance of such a crossover has been fully disclosed – photographs of the model are listed in the database of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the PRC.

So Geely Binyue / Coolray got new headlights and taillights, the latter being made in the form of a single stamp. The hood, bumpers, and tailgate have also been changed, and the grille is now “solid” and slatted, although the top edge of the guard remains. This new Geely branding is called the Energy Storm, and was previously tested on the Emgrand L sedan (which replaced the Emgrand GL) and the old Boyue X crossover (our SUV is called Atlas Pro, but this Russian version of the design is not yet allowed).

The length of the transformed Binyue is 4380mm, which is 50mm more than the withers after the first restyling. The remaining dimensions are the same: width – 1800 mm, height – 1609 mm, wheelbase – 2600 mm.

A new engine for an SUV has been announced: a 1.5 petrol turbo engine with a factory index BHE15-EFZ, it produces 181 hp. The number of cylinders is not specified, but the Chinese media write that there are four of them. The engine appears to be from Aurobay, a new joint venture between Geely and Volvo announced last summer (the joint venture was formed by a merger of the two companies' engine divisions).

Together with the restyled Binyue, the updated Geely Icon crossover was also declassified. Recall that this model was released in China two years ago, it is also based on the BMA station wagon (cross length is 4350 mm, wheelbase is 2640 mm). Unlike the Binyue, the Icon's design has only been slightly updated: it has a different grille, new bumper covers, and the rear bumper has also lost its rectangular “cutouts”. At the same time, the SUV also received a BHE15-EFZ 1.5 turbo engine.

Updated crossovers should enter the local market this year. It is unlikely that our Geely Coolray will change in the near future in the same way as in China, because SUVs have not yet been brought to us after the previous restyling. Well, Icon is not represented at all ?. But soon we will launch the Geely Monjaro flagship crossover (in the homeland it is Xingyue L).
